Caring for the most vulnerable children at the Providence Abuse Intervention Center

  • September 15, 2023June 11, 2024

Providence Swedish is dedicated to identifying and resolving population health challenges in our Puget Sound communities, ensuring the most vulnerable are supported and cared for – and our success relies on exceptional teams of behavioral health caregivers. Curious what it’s like to work with us? Following is a look at the services we provide at the Providence Abuse Intervention Center for children located in Lacey, Washington.

Investing in resilience—financially and personally

Our longstanding commitment to identify needs and provide Community Benefit is an essential way we live our Mission each day. Community Benefit funding enables programs such as the Providence Abuse Intervention Center, a nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center and national care model for children who have experienced abuse, emotional neglect or maltreatment. Receiving 600 referrals annually, it serves Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Grays Harbor and Pacific counties and collaborates with Indian Child Welfare and tribal communities.

Child advocacy centers are crucial for protecting and supporting children who have experienced abuse or trauma. For this reason, Providence Swedish continues investing in this program to ensure survivors can access services and support when they need it most—and we need a special type of caregiver to help us carry out this important work.

Says Heather Mcleod, Nurse Practitioner and Forensic Nurse Examiner supervisor, “Every single person we work with is completely passionate and dedicated to this work. It’s a job people choose because they are invested in taking care of those who’ve been through trauma. Not only are we serving the community, but we also work as a team with the community.”

The Providence Abuse Intervention Center’s Forensic Nurse Examiner program is a team of specially trained nurses that provides medical forensic exams in the emergency departments at Providence St. Peter and Centralia hospitals, and Madigan Army Medical Center. The clinic’s multi-disciplinary team includes medical personnel, special victim’s prosecutors, law enforcement, the Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF), forensic interviewers, social workers, and counselors. This multidisciplinary team works together to support the child through the entire process.

“I am proud that we impact children’s and families’ lives and that we change the trajectory of a child’s life with the services we provide,” says Dr. Joyce Gilbert, medical director of the Providence Abuse Intervention Center.
