Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at Swedish

  • August 21, 2020September 11, 2020

At Swedish, we recognize the need for systemic radical change. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of each person we serve and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is central to that mission. Here’s what we’re doing right now to grow in this area.

Recruiting the best and brightest

Swedish is committed to growing a robust organizational equity and inclusion program, in partnership with our caregivers, community partners and civic leaders. That begins by hiring a Chief Diversity Equity and Inclusion Officer, reporting to our CEO, to oversee our organizational strategy to attract, retain, develop and promote diverse talent across all areas of Swedish; build and strengthen structures, policies and protocols to provide an inclusive environment to all caregivers and those we serve; and ensure those we serve receive our highest quality of care and service regardless of their background, demographics or other identifying and differentiating characteristics.

In addition, we’ll continue engaging in ongoing recruitment practices for all levels and departments to bring the best and brightest talent to Swedish, prioritizing diversity in race, culture, gender orientation, background, experience, talent and thought. We’re focused on recruiting, attracting and retaining diverse staff—including talented people from Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and other underrepresented groups—with the full range of competencies needed to advance our organizational mission.

Fostering an inclusive workplace

We want caregivers to work with us because we foster an inclusive workplace and environment where everyone is essential, heard, respected, engaged and valued. We do not tolerate behavior and attitudes that perpetuate bias, stereotypes and microaggressions in the organization. We work to create an environment where caregivers, patients, families and stakeholders of differing backgrounds and perspectives can experience a community of mutual respect, inclusivity and collegiality, and know unequivocally that diversity is valued.

“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.” -Maya Angelou
